Does a Jumpsuit Need Shoulder Pads? Maybe So.

Updated: Oct 25, 2022

The search continues for the right jumpsuit to accommodate longer lengths and curvaceous curves. With that said, I have to share some kind words about this plaid spliced padded shoulder jumpsuit from Shein. I don't know where they got the design inspiration for it, but I like it. I like it a lot. It's striking. It's flattering. It's comfy. It checks my boxes for a jumpsuit and a piece of clothing in general.

What I love about it

The design is a head-turner. Black will always be in style and plaid is a classic pattern as well. The pattern distribution could have easily been a top-half-and-bottom-half split, but I appreciate the bold choice of drawing a line straight down the middle of this jumpsuit. Lines are important because they guide the eye and impact the appearance of body types. Horizontal lines give wider and vertical lines give slender or taller. I can personally attest to this phenomenon...it may even be an illusion, but it works. So, the fact that this jumpsuit's design is split down the middle gives equal weight to both patterns and a balanced appearance to the body wearing it.

The elastic, ruched waist is a must! As a thicker lady, it's so important to accentuate the waist because the world must know there's a shape to such a great mass of body. I feel like a snatched waist is one of those feminine body parts that unconsciously draw attention.

The material is thick, soft, and comfortable. You can bend, stretch and move smoothly in this jumpsuit. Go on and hit that "bend and snap." The thicker fabric makes this suit fitting for cooler weather and the sleeveless style makes it work in average or warmer weather, which means...it's versatile. Very nice.

The drawbacks

No pockets -- how disappointing. I'm really surprised this jumpsuit doesn't have pockets. I found myself reaching down to stick my hands beside my hips and there was nothing to hold them. This was such a missed opportunity for what would have been a near-perfect piece.

The elastic, ruched ankles aren't it for me. I can leave 'em. The style reminds me of children's clothing and onesies for babies. And yes, the irony isn't lost upon me that jumpsuits and rompers are essentially children's clothing. Jumpsuits can be so cozy and stylish so I adore them. I just don't need elastic ankles on anything.

Shoulder pads aren't the fashion fixture today that they were in the 80s. Because I naturally have the broad shoulders these pads are supposed to supply; I can take 'em or leave 'em. I can see why the jumpsuit was made with them though: it presents a striking figure for most. Shoulder pads are a preference so they might be a drawback for some folks.

Is it tall-girl friendly?

It's appropriate for tall ladies. I'm 5'11 and the ankles are a little higher than I prefer them to be, but the jumpsuit works. It's also high-waisted, which works in the favor of taller individuals. Yes, I'd recommend this jumpsuit to other ladies who are over 5'10.

Other features

This jumpsuit is equipped with a zipper back. It has a regular fit so it's not too tight and not too loose. The design and style work for more than one season and more than one occasion, so it's one of those outfits that you can dress up or dress down. I very much appreciate clothes with multiple purposes. That ups the value to me and it's convenient.
